Step-by-step guide to applying for your Tax File Number. Do this in your first week.
Your Tax File Number (TFN) is a unique 9-digit number issued by the ATO. You need it to work legally in Australia, lodge tax returns, and access some government services. You can apply online in about 20 minutes — do it in your first week. There is no fee.
Visit ato.gov.au/tfn and click 'Apply for a TFN.' You must have arrived in Australia to apply — you cannot apply from overseas.
Select 'Foreign passport holder' as your identity type. Enter your passport details exactly as they appear. You will need your Australian address and your date of arrival. The whole form takes about 20 minutes.
After submitting, you'll receive an acknowledgement with a reference number. Save this. Your TFN will be mailed to your Australian address within 28 days.
Once your TFN arrives, provide it to your employer using a Tax file number declaration form. Until then, tell your employer you have applied and they should withhold tax at 47% — this will be refunded when you lodge your tax return.
The TFN application is completely free through the ATO website. Migration agents charging $50–200 to 'help' you apply are scamming you. There is no advantage to using a third party.
Your TFN is highly sensitive. Only give it to your employer, bank, and the ATO. Never send it by email or post it online. Scammers who get your TFN can use it to commit tax fraud in your name.
