When to file, how to use myTax for free, and how to maximise your refund.
Australia's financial year runs from 1 July to 30 June. You can lodge your tax return from 1 July using the ATO's free myTax tool. Most students who work during the year get a refund — often $300–$2,000. You have until 31 October to lodge, but lodging earlier means you receive your refund sooner.
Go to my.gov.au and create an account. Link the ATO service. Your employer's payment summary (income statement) will be loaded here automatically by the end of July.
Your employer is required to finalise your income statement in myGov by 31 July. Once it is marked 'Tax Ready', you can proceed with your return. If it's not appearing, contact your employer.
In myGov, go to the ATO and select 'Lodge a tax return.' myTax pre-fills most information from your employer and bank. Review each section carefully. Add any work-related deductions (more on this below).
You can deduct expenses you paid for that relate directly to your work — not your study. Common deductions: work uniform costs, tools required for your job, union fees, and the cost of a dedicated work bag. Keep receipts.
Once lodged, refunds are typically processed within 2 weeks into your nominated bank account.
myTax is free and handles most student returns easily. Tax agents are useful for complex situations. For a standard single-employer casual job, myTax is all you need.
If you earned any income in Australia during the financial year, you are required to lodge a return. Failure to lodge can result in penalties.
